Traditional Systems to Synergetic Structures- with Bamboo
Ar. Neelam Manjunath presented a paper at the World Bamboo Congress 2012 at Belgium on the journey of Bamboo as a building material, starting from its traditional indigenous technologies to its growing recognition as a wonder- material in today’s world. A brief introduction about the Bamboo Application Technology courses that are conducted by CGBMT was also given. The presentation spoke about how bamboo became suppressed in the post colonial era, owing to industrialization, coming to be referred as “poor man’s timber”. It also outlined three projects done by Manasaram architects that show that Bamboo can be used to achieve various kinds of structural systems which are high-end and modernistic. These are House of Five Elements, Bangalore, a shell structure; Bamboo Symphony, Bangalore, a Tensigrity structure and Police Bhavan, Bangalore, a dome & shell structure.
