Cocoon-Farmer's Pavilion Krishi Vigyan Kendra Trichy

Date: November 24, 2014 Organizer: CARE School Of Architecture, Trichy

'Cocoon'- Farmer's Pavilion' is the Product of  a 3-week Design-Build Workshop conducted in Trichy.  This project, headed by Manasaram Architects and aided by CGBMT's artisans was in association with CARE school of Architecture, Trichy  and Aarhus School of Architecture, Denmark. It included the building of a bamboo-cocoon structure, furniture making and understanding of bamboo cultivation, treatment, selection and utilization. Cocoon is a space for education, discussions and exhibition for the farmers and visitors of Krishi Vigyan Kendra, Trichy. The aim was to create a space which was welcoming, comfortable for relaxing and discussions, while being climate responsive. Bamboo, the primary material used with traditional weaving techniques helped create a contemporary building. The building is a grid shell structure made of bamboo splits with the wall and roof being a continuous element, utilizing a three-way weave. A base ring held the members in place. Areka- bark plates were used as shingles.

The Project has been nominated for the President’s medal instituted by Royal Institute of British Architects (RIBA).
