Traditional Systems To Synergetic Structures- With Bamboo
Date: September 28, 2012 Organizer: ARCHIDEV, Atelier D'architecture, Paris
Ar. Neelam Manjunath presented a paper at the Architects Union in Paris on the journey of Bamboo as a building material, starting from its traditional indigenous technologies to its growing recognition as a wonder-material in today’s world. She spoke about how its importance became suppressed in the post-colonial era, owing to industrialization, coming to be referred as “poor man’s timber”. The presentation outlined three projects done by Manasaram architects that show that Bamboo can be used to achieve various kinds of structural systems which are high-end and modernistic. These are House of Five Elements, Bangalore, a shell structure; Bamboo Symphony, Bangalore, a tensegrity structure and Police Bhavan, Bangalore, a dome & shell structure.
